Contributions to the Map

Contributions to the Map

Send them to btm@templetons.com.

You can send a list of addresses, one per line (address must work in Google Maps and should not be just the name of a city, make it the name of a region in the city at least.)

Or if you have just a couple of locations, fill out this form

If you have many entries or it's easier, send me a spreadsheet. Model your rows after this sample sheet and note the instructions.

Spreadsheet columns

See the "instructions" sub-sheet for more details but note:

  • As noted, the address must work if you type it in Google Maps. Please test. Please make a point inside the service area. If you just name a city then your entry might overlap on another entry that also did this, hiding your entry.
  • The name is your company or project name
  • The description can be as long as you like, with URLs in it. The description must not contain any marketing speak, like calling the project the best, or the first, or biggest or anything at all like that. Just plain facts about it, like somebody else would write. Anything that smells promotional will get your entry deleted. (And no, don't think, "but it really was the first so that's a fact.")
  • The class is described in the Instructions sub-sheet
  • The note is anything not in the description.
  • The webpage is the URL of your web page, either for your project. You can promote yourself there. You can also provide a videourl, ideally to YouTube.
  • When providing a location, try to avoid naming just a city, give an address or sub-town or landmark within the town. Test it in Google Maps to see that it knows it. Companies with info please provide the list of addresses, one per line, or in a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet can have columns, one for the address and one for a long description including URLs, and optionally a third column with a single code for the type of operation. (Such as Robotaxi, Safety, Planned, Truck, Shuttle, Sidewalk or invite something new.
  • Want to get fancy? You can send me photos, image URLs, YouTube URLs and even polygons of your service area in WKT format, to get attached to your entry.

A few entries were sourced from the Autora database.

Submitting a service area or long-haul truck route

It is possible to provide, instead of a single point, either a service area or a route. These will not display a name on the map unless the user clicks.

To do this you must build a path or polygon in Google MyMaps. Click to use that (you must be logged in to Google.)

  1. Click "Create a New Map"
  2. On the map, you will use the "Draw polygon" tool in "add line or shape" mode. It may be tempting to use the "driving route" or other route modes, but that doesn't display as we like.
  3. Select the tool and then draw your line or polygon. You don't have to hit it exactly on the road but try for a decent fit. You can keep adding points to lay out your route. Finally double click at the end, and it will be added to your layer. When you double click enter your Company name and any description info on this route.
  4. If you double click back on the first point, that will close the polygon and make a service area map.
  5. Now, go to your layer with your routes and service area, and click on the "..." menu.
  6. Select "Export Data" and choose "CSV"
  7. Email me the resulting CSV file you saved. If you have a web page URL or video URL send those as well. If you have a table of those, you can provide a spreadsheet.

If you have a large set of routes to enter, let me know and I will provide better details on how to make it much easier for you to import. Generally you should load your CSV file into a spreadsheet, and extract the column marked "WKT" and make a spreadsheet just like the other one, except instead of an "address" column it has the WKT column.
